ASC Oil Filled capacitors

These ASC oil-filled capacitors strike a great balance between value and quality, providing excellent performance without breaking the bank. Made with non-inductive mylar and oil, these capacitors use oil-soaked mylar as the dielectric material, resulting in a smooth and natural sound.

Quick Overview

AC Filter Options

ASC Oil-filled capacitors have been used for years in high-current and high-voltage applications like motor run, energy storage, and power factor correction. The oil cools the large capacitors, displaces air to prevent corrosion, reduces the chance of destructive corona, and increases the voltage breakdown for a given dielectric thickness. Although “oil” refers to various liquids, some prefer the term “liquid-filled” for clarity. “Mineral oil” can mean any non-chlorinated liquid, including refined petroleum oils, silicones, and synthetic esters.

Details

For improved performance in lighting and ballasts, ASC oval and round oil-filled metallized polypropylene lighting capacitors are designed to operate in high-temperature environments. Each ASC capacitor is impregnated with mineral oil, ensuring a void-free winding for highly stable capacitance. The capacitors are hermetically sealed in aluminum casings to ensure long life.

ASC manufactures high-voltage oil-filled capacitors for specific applications utilizing film technology. These capacitors are designed for pulse, filtering, coupling, multipliers, pulse forming networks, and tuned circuit applications. Various container configurations are available, suitable for power supplies, CW and pulsed lasers, high-frequency induction heating, commutation, snubber, welding, energy storage, and pulse discharge applications.

The DC filter capacitor is primarily used to filter the DC power supply, reducing high-order harmonics in the DC output voltage to minimize voltage fluctuations and harmonic pollution. These capacitors can run for extended periods under a certain AC harmonic component. Since 1927, a variety of mineral oils have been used in capacitors and other electrical applications, with ongoing research. The fluids used include high-temperature hydrocarbons (like diaryl ethane), silicones, fluorocarbons, and synthetic esters. Other materials used include polypropylene glycol, polybutene, dioctylphthalate, diphenylethylane, polyethylene glycols, modified soybean oil, castor oil, and rapeseed oil. Some chlorinated hydrocarbons with good biodegradation and photodegradation properties are also used, known as Faradol and Dielectral. Oil plus wax, epoxy, and inert gas are sometimes used to prevent corrosion. Not all replacement fluids are non-toxic, and some may pose future disposal challenges, though they are more biodegradable than PCBs.
