Electronic Concepts, Inc. (ECI) – ECIcaps AC Filter Capacitors
Quick Overview
Electronic Concepts ECIcaps AC Filter Capacitors are designed for AC filtering and Power Factor Correction (PFC), with the type of capacitor depending on the system power. These capacitors are essential in power converter circuits for filtering harmonic content in input and output signals, serving as voltage modifiers, and maintaining stability over temperature, frequency, and time. They are constructed using thin polypropylene film as their dielectric and are commonly used in inverters, energy storage systems, motor drives, industrial machinery, battery chargers, and more.

Explore ECI’s range of AC Filter film capacitors, crafted from materials such as metallized polypropylene and metallized plastic film. Most of these capacitors are UL recognized components, with some being used in critical aerospace and marine 400Hz AC applications. For unique AC filtering needs, contact ECI’s design center, which offers the flexibility to create film capacitors with custom specifications.
When selecting film capacitors, it is crucial to recognize that not all capacitors are equal. ECIcaps capacitors offer high electrical efficiency due to special film technology. Excessive losses can generate heat, leading to premature failure of film capacitors. While the initial cost of ECIcaps capacitors may be higher than simpler capacitors using older technology, they provide advantages such as increased lifespan, lower power consumption, potentially smaller design (eliminating the need for a heat sink), and better control of power flow into and out of your product.
ECIcaps AC filter capacitors are also suitable for large AC filter circuits, UPS (uninterruptible power supply), frequency changers, electroplating power supplies, inverters, and large SMPS. They are also used as energy storage capacitors for electric welding machines and other electronic equipment.
Features:
- Excellent self-healing and electrical performance
- Metallized polypropylene film structure
- Suitable for AC output filtering circuits, such as LCL filtering in UPS and solar photovoltaic DC/AC inverters
- Ability to withstand large ripple currents
- Low self-inductance, minimal temperature rise
- Small dissipation factor (DF), high density
- Lead-out options: nuts, screws, axial
These high-performance AC filtering capacitors offer excellent harmonic absorption, high reactive power, and stable capacitance. They are used in AC-filter circuits for UPS systems, welding equipment, and tuned passive filtering. Many of ECIcaps AC rated series are approved for diverse applications, including motors, HVAC, HID lighting, and large inverters.
ECIcaps offers standard and custom designs available in single-phase or three-phase configurations in cylindrical and rectangular cases. Using customer-supplied harmonic content profiles, ECIcaps designs theircapacitors to filter out multiple harmonic frequencies encountered in the output of AC inverters.
3MP Capacitor Series: Designed to Handle High RMS Currents
For today’s high-energy AC filtering needs, the 3MP Capacitor Series offers a robust integrated flange for versatile mounting positions and male and female terminal options. Its most unique feature is the ability to accept a thermal sensing device located at the capacitor’s hot spot. A normally open or closed thermal cut-out (TCO) is potted at the geometric center of the device. When the capacitor reaches critical temperatures, the TCO opens, triggering a user-defined circuit to take the appropriate action. The capacitor can also accept other sensing technologies per customer specifications.
Key Features:
- UL recognized
- Long life: > 100,000 hours
- Low ESR
- High RMS current capability
- High surge voltage capability: 1.5 x VDC
- Thermal cut-out safety option
5MPF Capacitor Series: Designed with an Internal Fuse
The 5MPF Capacitor Series is a polypropylene film capacitor specifically designed for AC applications, featuring an internal fuse that electrically disconnects when the capacitor’s hot spot reaches a defined temperature, without deforming the case. This series includes Fuseac® technology, housed in an aluminum cylindrical can with a plastic header, radial terminals, and a mounting bolt to meet power management system requirements.
