Closely held ServerWorks, based in Santa Clara, Calif., makes “input/output” chips that are used by companies such as Dell Computer Corp. , International Business Machines Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. in servers that use Intel Corp. microprocessors.
Broadcom Corp. acquired ServerWorks Corp. for about $1.03 billion in stock as it looks to gain access to the chips that help speed the exchange of data between the processor and other parts inside computer servers.
