Metal-oxide film resistors are made of metal oxides which results in a higher operating temperature and greater stability/reliability than Metal film. They are used in applications with high endurance demands. The metal oxide film resistor was the first major alternative to the carbon composition used up until the early 1960s.

Metal Film Resistors have much better temperature stability than their carbon equivalents, lower noise and are generally better for high frequency or radio frequency applications. Metal Oxide Resistors have better high surge current capability with a much higher temperature rating than the equivalent metal film resistors.

The metal oxide film resistor provided a significant improvement in performance over the carbon resistors with higher degrees of stability, accuracy, and much lower levels of noise for which the carbon resistors were renowned.

Metal film and metal oxide resistors use identical methods for patterning and trimming. Metal oxide resistors likely have superior current pulse handling. Metal film is typically used nowadays for a plate load resistor, instead of the old carbon comp. Metal oxide is used for screen grid and power resistors.

Metal oxide film resistors are manufactured as fixed leaded resistors. They are use a ceramic rod as the base for the resistor. This is coated with a thin film of a conductive metal oxide – one popular material is tin oxide.
