LED Lighting

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) use solid-state lighting technology to generate light through a solid material—specifically, a semiconductor. This method sets them apart from traditional light sources like incandescent bulbs, which emit light through a vacuum, and compact fluorescent lamps, which use gas.

The core principle behind LED light emission is Band-to-Band recombination, where electrons and holes combine and release energy in the form of light. Current in LEDs flows in a single direction: electrons move through the semiconductor toward positively charged holes on the opposite end. When these electrons and holes meet, light is emitted.

LEDs were first introduced in 1962 and initially produced only red light, commonly used as indicator lights in electronics. During the 1970s, green and yellow LEDs were developed, leading to broader use in applications like calculators and traffic lights. The invention of high-intensity blue LEDs in 1993 was a breakthrough, enabling the creation of white light by combining red, green, and blue—the primary colors of light.

LEDs are available in various types, including:

Miniature LEDs: Compact units designed for direct mounting on circuit boards (e.g., phone indicators).

High-Power LEDs: Bright light sources used in applications like LED strips and automotive lighting.

Application-Specific LEDs: Designed for specialized uses such as signage, billboards, or medical devices.
