Diodes & Rectifiers

A diode is a fundamental electronic component that allows current to flow primarily in one direction while blocking it in the opposite direction. The most common type used in modern circuits is the semiconductor diode, though several other variations exist for specialized applications.

One key application of diodes is rectification—the process of converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This is accomplished using a rectifier diode, which is specifically designed to handle higher currents and voltages than standard signal diodes, making it ideal for power supply circuits.

Rectifier diodes operate on the same basic principles as other diodes, using a PN junction to control current direction. However, they are built to withstand the demands of power conversion and filtering applications, offering reliable performance in high-power environments.
