Programmable Logic ICs

Programmable Logic ICs provide distinct advantages over traditional functional Integrated Circuits (ICs), especially in applications that demand flexibility and customization. Programmable logic can be integrated into your device in a wide range of ways—from simple gate configurations or multiplexers to advanced FPGAs featuring built-in microcontrollers and I/O peripherals, as well as specialized solutions like ARM’s PrimeCell GPIO.

Unlike standard ICs, which contain fixed logic gates designed for a specific function, Programmable Logic ICs are versatile components that allow the creation of reconfigurable digital circuits. When manufactured, these devices have no predefined function and can be programmed later to perform a wide variety of tasks.

Key types of programmable logic devices include:

Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs): Designed for implementing complex combinational or sequential logic, CPLDs consist of logic array blocks, programmable interconnects, and I/O blocks.

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs): Ideal for prototyping application-specific ICs, FPGAs contain logic blocks, programmable switch matrices, I/O blocks, and interconnects.

Simple Programmable Logic Devices (SPLDs): The smallest and simplest programmable logic devices, SPLDs are further categorized into Fixed Logic Devices (FLDs) and Programmable Logic Devices (PLDs).
