- Terminals:
- Electronic Switches may feature a variety of terminals (connections to the switch) including Screw, Solder, Quick Connect, Printed Circuit Board, and Wire leads.
- Contact/Contact Set:
- The Contact/Contact Set comprises the internal moving and fixed parts responsible for opening and closing the circuit.
- Actuator:
- The Actuator is the handle in a toggle, the button in a Push Button, button, arm or lever on a Snap, and the shaft on a Rotary.
- Basic Definitions:
- Terms include SP (Single Pole), DP (Double Pole), 3P (3 Pole), ST (Single Throw), DT (Double Throw), ON/OFF, ON/ON, ON/NONE/ON, and others.
- Momentary Electronic Switch:
- This type maintains the contact function only as long as the actuator is held. Upon release, the actuator returns to the rest position.
- Micro, Mini, and Full Toggle Switches:
- Micro Toggle switches fit in a 1/8-inch mounting hole, Mini toggles are slightly larger and fit a #10 or a 1/4-inch hole, while Full Toggles are much larger and fit an 11/16-inch hole.
- Rocker Electronic Switches:
- Similar to Toggle switches, Rocker switches have a shorter actuator moved by the rocking action of the button and bracket.
- Pushbutton Electronic Switches:
- Available in Momentary and Alternate Action types, with the latter maintaining contacts until pressed again. Limited to two throws, the most common is NO (Normally Open).
- Keypads:
- Keypads consist of a matrix of Normally Open Push Button switches, forming a connection across terminals when a button is pressed.
- Rotary or Selector Electronic Switches:
- Available as Cam actuated or wafer contacts, with Cam type often found in Switch Boards and Motor controls, and Rotary type using insulated Wafers called Decks with fixed and movable contacts.
- HEX, BCD, and Coded Electronic Switches:
- These are forms of multi-pole rotary switches with contacts internally wired to represent a digital switch position.
