Discrete Semiconductors
Discrete semiconductors are individual semiconductor components that perform a single, specific electrical function. These include components such as transistors, diodes, thyristors, and small arrays containing a few similar devices packaged together. Unlike integrated circuits (ICs), which combine multiple functions into one chip, discrete semiconductors are focused on executing fundamental operations.
One of the most widely used discrete devices is the MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor), which is commonly employed in circuits that handle high voltage or current levels, or where basic switching or amplification functions are required.
Examples of discrete semiconductor components include:
Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs)
Zener diodes
Thyristors
Bridge rectifiers
Magnetrons and valves (in legacy or specialized systems)
Many of these devices are available as modular components, designed for easy integration into a wide range of electronic systems, from power supplies to motor control and signal regulation.
In summary, discrete semiconductors are essential building blocks in electronics where simplicity, high-power handling, or modularity is needed, providing core functionality in everything from consumer electronics to industrial applications.
