Discrete Semiconductors
Discrete semiconductor devices include individual components such as transistors, diodes, and thyristors, as well as small assemblies of two to four similar devices housed in a single package. One of the most common examples is the MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor), widely used for circuits requiring high voltage or current handling and for implementing basic electronic functions.
These components also encompass rectifiers, valves, and other modular devices that can be easily integrated into existing circuits. Some discrete semiconductors are designed to perform the equivalent function of two or more separate components, helping reduce board space and simplify circuit design.
The performance of discrete semiconductors often depends on their internal structure. For example, thyristors consist of four alternating layers of n-type and p-type semiconductor materials, enabling their characteristic switching behavior.
